Home | However in 1828 a group of six businessmen start buying land to establish a new port for the shipment of coal from the Tees. They wisely saw the potential for this large marshy area located close to the mouth of the Tees and not far from Stockton. By the early 1830s the town of Middlesbrough was born. The town was further strengthened bythe achievement of the Stockton to Middlesbrough railway line known locally as the border. in the 1840, the port was flourishing as a major coal exporter, and the population had grown to 5,000. |
